Case Study: Non-Molestation Order in Hullbridge, Rayleigh

Challenge

A professional woman in Rayleigh had obtained a non-molestation order against her ex-husband following their acrimonious divorce. Although the marriage had ended two years previously, he had become increasingly obsessed with her new relationship and was engaging in sophisticated stalking behaviour. He had installed tracking software on her car without her knowledge, was monitoring her social media accounts through fake profiles, and had been photographing her and her new partner in public places.

Most disturbingly, he had begun following her teenage daughter from school, claiming he just wanted to “check she was safe” but terrifying the child in the process. The behaviour suggested someone who was educated, calculating, and determined — far more complex than impulsive, reactive harassment. The non-molestation order prohibited any contact with the victim or her daughter, any surveillance or monitoring, and required him to stay at least 100 metres from her home and her daughter’s school.

However, serving the order presented unusual challenges. The ex-husband was a successful IT consultant who worked entirely remotely from his home in the nearby riverside village of Hullbridge, rarely leaving the property during business hours. He had sophisticated home security including cameras covering all approaches, and previous service attempts by court bailiffs had failed when he simply refused to answer the door whilst watching them on his security system. He clearly knew that avoiding service would delay the order’s enforcement.

Action

iSpy Detectives recognised this required an intelligent, strategic approach against someone who was himself strategic and technically savvy. Our investigation revealed that despite his hermit-like work-from-home lifestyle, he regularly attended a gym in Rayleigh town centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 7:00pm and 9:00pm—one of his few predictable outings. We positioned our process server in the gym car park on a Thursday evening, successfully identifying him from photographs as he arrived at 7:15pm. The service was executed in the car park before he entered the gym, using the public setting and the presence of other gym users to ensure safety.

Our operative approached professionally, confirmed identity, and served the non-molestation order directly. The ex-husband, despite his intelligence and awareness of legal processes, appeared shocked at being served away from the security of his monitored home environment. Our server explained the order’s terms clearly and specifically emphasised the prohibition on electronic surveillance and tracking—making clear that the tracking software on the victim’s car must be removed immediately and that his technical skills could not be used to circumvent the order.

Body-worn camera footage captured his acknowledgement and understanding. We immediately notified Essex Police, who attended his Hullbridge home that evening to conduct a formal warning and to ensure he understood that his IT expertise would not provide any defence if he breached the order through technical means.

Result

The non-molestation order was served successfully, and the follow-up police visit appeared to have a sobering effect on someone who had perhaps believed his technical sophistication would allow him to continue surveillance without consequences. The victim had her car examined by a specialist, and the tracking device was found and removed.

All stalking behaviour ceased completely—no further social media monitoring, no photographs, no following of the daughter. The ex-husband appeared to have finally accepted that the relationship was over and that his behaviour would result in serious legal consequences.

Twelve months later, the order remained in place with zero breaches. The victim was able to develop her new relationship without fear, and her daughter’s anxiety about being followed to school disappeared completely.

The client praised our creative problem-solving in identifying a vulnerable moment for service and our specific focus on the technical aspects of the harassment that made this case unusual.
