Case Study: Non-Molestation Order served in Allt-yr-yn, Newport

Challenge

A young woman in Newport had experienced a terrifying escalation in controlling behaviour from her boyfriend, culminating in a violent assault that left her with a fractured cheekbone and multiple bruises. She ended the relationship immediately and reported the assault to Gwent Police, leading to his arrest and charge for actual bodily harm.

However, whilst on bail awaiting trial, he began a campaign of intimidation designed to pressure her into withdrawing her statement. He recruited friends to watch her house in the Allt-yr-yn district near the River Usk, sent threatening messages through intermediaries, and posted photos of her home on social media with menacing captions.

The psychological impact was severe—she was too frightened to leave her house and was experiencing panic attacks. With the support of a domestic violence charity, she applied for and obtained an emergency non-molestation order prohibiting any contact direct or indirect, and banning him from her street. Serving the order proved difficult because he had moved from his last known address in Newport to stay with family in the nearby town of Cwmbran, approximately three miles away, and was actively avoiding anyone who might be attempting service. The victim desperately needed the order served quickly to activate the legal protection.

Action

iSpy Detectives prioritised this high-risk domestic violence case, assigning our most experienced Welsh operative who had extensive knowledge of the Newport and Cwmbran areas. We conducted intensive tracing work, examining electoral roll data, DVLA records, and social media intelligence to locate the perpetrator’s family address in Cwmbran.

Surveillance confirmed he was residing there, typically leaving mid-afternoon to socialise with friends. Over three days, our process server attempted service at the Cwmbran address, but the perpetrator’s family were uncooperative and claimed he wasn’t living there despite evidence to the contrary. We adjusted our strategy, positioning our operative to intercept him away from the protected environment of his family home.

On day four, we successfully identified him leaving the address at 2:45pm and followed him to a nearby shopping centre. Our server approached him in the car park before he entered the shops, using the public setting to ensure safety whilst avoiding his family’s interference. Despite initial denials of identity and aggressive posturing, our operative — who had previously reviewed police custody photos to ensure positive identification — firmly confirmed his identity and served the non-molestation order directly. The explanation was clear and unequivocal: any breach would result in immediate arrest, the victim had full legal protection, and the order covered both direct contact and any contact through third parties including his friends acting on his behalf.

The service was documented with comprehensive video footage and GPS-stamped evidence, and we coordinated immediate notification to Gwent Police who conducted a formal warning visit within two hours.

Result

The non-molestation order was served successfully despite the perpetrator’s evasion tactics and his family’s attempts to shield him. The order came into immediate effect, and the formal police warning that followed our service appeared to have a significant impact. All harassment ceased immediately—the friends watching the victim’s house disappeared, the social media posts were deleted, and there were no further attempts at contact. The victim reported feeling safe for the first time in months and was able to re-engage with normal life activities.

The criminal case proceeded to trial four months later, where the perpetrator pleaded guilty to assault. The judge noted that the non-molestation order breach would have resulted in additional charges had any occurred, and imposed a restraining order as part of the sentence. Our client praised our determination in locating an evasive perpetrator and our sensitive understanding of the victim’s extreme vulnerability and need for rapid protection.
